Dean’s Welcome

As we begin 2019, the year that marks the 75th anniversary of SAIS’ opening, I’m pleased to share with you our newly reimagined SAIS Magazine. This issue explores the future of global order as nationalism continues gaining influence in political systems at every corner of the map. Professors Mary Sarotte and Hal Brands offer valuable insights from history and their expertise on current diplomatic challenges.

You will learn about some of the wonderful events we have recently held at the school. SAIS has hosted forums with the philanthropist Bill Gates, a talk with celebrated strategist Ian Bremmer, and a memorial for one of the most influential figures of U.S. statecraft and of the school, Zbigniew Brzezinski, with members of the Brzezinski family and his protégée, Madeleine Albright.

We are excited to introduce faculty members who will be leading new eras for several academic programs. We are also proud to announce new appointments for two longtime professors now rejuvenating academic and faculty affairs.

Join us in looking back at the school’s long record of groundbreaking achievements and plan to celebrate with the Johns Hopkins SAIS community as we mark our 75th anniversary at several upcoming events around the globe throughout 2019.

We hope you enjoy these stories illustrating the study and leadership of international relations.
